Dear PFFM District Vice Presidents,
I’m excited to write today to announce that on May 23, 2010, the IAFF Burn Foundation will partner with Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Boston for the first annual New England Walk for Burn Awareness. This 5K walk will be a chance for fire fighters and their families to join Shriners’ patients and supporters in a casual and fun atmosphere while bringing attention to burn injuries.
Our hope is to create an annual New England event to raise funds and help increase awareness of the work fire fighters do to prevent burn injuries from happening. We want to show our support for the work our burn centers do to ensure the people we rescue continue to maintain the high survival rate and quality of life currently afforded to the more than 500,000 people, including fire fighters that are burned each year.
Many New England children have benefited from the care provided at Shriners Hospital, myself included. As a child, I sustained 3rd degree burns on 35% of my body after a gasoline explosion and was a patient at Shriners Hospital for many years. I now meet one-on-one with patients there and I can tell you without hesitation that the families and staff at Shriners Hospital appreciate fire fighters and the work we do.
The May 23rd New England Walk for Burn Awareness will be a fun day for the entire family! After the leisurely 5K stroll along the water participants will receive tee shirts, light refreshments and fun surprises. Proceeds from the Walk for Burn Awareness will benefit the IAFF Burn Foundation, Boston Fire Fighters Local 718 Burn Fondation, and Shriners Hospitals for Children - Boston. This will truly be a “New England” event. We are not targeting Boston companies for fundraising; rather we are focusing our efforts on all companies within the 3rd District of the IAFF. And we need your help!
In closing, I hope you will join the IAFF Burn Foundation for this event. Only by working together will we achieve ultimate success. I can be reached at 978-502-8706 or tammaro1495@gmail.com should you have any questions.
Fraternally,
Phil Tammaro
3rd District Coordinator IAFF Burn Foundation
