Firehouse Magazine based in Melville, NY has announced the winners of their 2010 Heroism and Community Service Awards.

Four members of Cambridge Fire Department Engine Co. 1 were awarded a Unit Citation in the Heroism category.

The members of Engine Co. 1; Lt. David House, Firefighters Vinroy Paul, Joseph Hallissey and Gary Plunkett were recognized for their actions on November 27, 2010 when an emotionally disturbed person in Harvard Square was trying to grab the service weapon of a MBTA Transit Revenue Officers. The actions of these firefighters prevented what was sure to be a tragic situation from occurring in a very congested Harvard Square at 9:00am on the day before Thanksgiving. These firefighters tackled and subdued the individual, preventing him from gaining possession of the gun.

Firefighter/Paramedic Reneau Cherant received a Community Service Award for his volunteering in Haiti following the January 2010 earthquake. Firefighter/Paramedic Cherant assumed his own expenses to travel to Haiti and provided life saving skills at the Service Community Clinic in Petion-Ville. He remained in Haiti for one week treating hundreds of adults and children suffering from all different kinds of injuries and illnesses as a result of the devastating earthquake.
